Reading the day and night map

The shaded part of the map is where the sun has set right now. The shading begins at the terminator — the line where the sun sits exactly on the horizon — and deepens through twilight until the sun is 18° below the horizon and the sky is fully dark. The glowing yellow dot marks the one spot on Earth where the sun is straight overhead; it drifts west about 15° every hour, and north and south with the seasons.

Each city card shows the same thing up close: its clock face is light while the sun is up there and turns dark the moment it actually sets, so the cards always agree with the map. Ethiopia’s time zone

Ethiopia runs on East Africa Time, three hours ahead of UTC, the same as Kenya, Riyadh and Moscow, and never changes its clocks. Dubai is an hour ahead of Addis Ababa, India two and a half, China five and Japan six. Because Ethiopia sits close to the equator, the sun rises and sets near 6:30 all year — the sunrise and sunset on the Addis Ababa card barely move from one season to the next.

Because Earth is tilted. Around the equinoxes in March and September the line between day and night runs almost straight from pole to pole, and everywhere gets close to 12 hours of daylight. Toward the solstices in June and December it bends into a deep curve, giving long days on one hemisphere and long nights on the other.

How accurate is the day and night map?

The sun's position is calculated with the same method NOAA uses for its sunrise and sunset tables and is redrawn every minute, so the shading tracks the real terminator to within a fraction of a degree. Sunrise and sunset times are for sea level with standard refraction, typically within a minute or two of what you'd see on a clear horizon.
